Expansion of Early Learning Childcare

Expansion of Early Learning Childcare

1140 hours

The Scottish Government is committed to the near doubling of entitlement to funded early learning and childcare to 1140 hours a year by 2020 for all 3 and 4 year olds and eligible 2 year olds. The aim is to provide high quality, flexible early learning and childcare that is accessible and affordable for all families.

The first in a series of action plans is available to refer to ‘A Blueprint for 2020: The Expansion of Early Learning and Childcare in Scotland: 2017-18 Action Plan’.

What this means for you

Currently all 3 and 4 year olds, and eligible 2 year olds, are entitled to 600 hours of free early learning and childcare.

  • Over 38 weeks per year this is equivalent to 15 hours 50 minutes per week.
  • Over 50 weeks per year this is equivalent to 12 hours per week.
  • By doubling this entitlement this will mean over 38 weeks per year, this is equivalent to 30 hours a week.
  • Over 50 weeks per year, it is equivalent to just under 23 hours a week.

In Clackmannanshire the first phase of the implementation of 1140 hours is well underway.

Coalsnaughton Primary School Nursery Class have been piloting 1140 hours and the new nursery within the Tullibody South campus will offer 1140 hours from August 2019.

A new stand alone nursery is also being built in Menstrie which will also offer 1140 hours.
